After the Culture Wars, is it the Hospital Wars? In America, President Obama is being vilified as a Nazi/socialist/granny-killer for proposing reforms that will increase government involvement in healthcare. In the UK, there has been a Twitter-led backlash against the accusation by opponents of the Obama plan that our state-run, tax-funded National Health Service is anything less than a shining citadel of medical care. In truth, US healthcare needs reform and British healthcare is far from perfect. But the vehemence of the reaction on both sides of the pond suggests that this debate is not really about medical treatment, but is a fearful reaction to what the future might hold more generally.
