A new survey has found that 20% of homosexual men and women have suffered an assault over the last three years.
Almost half the lesbian and gay people in the survey thought they were at greater risk of being physically assaulted than a heterosexual. One third said they altered their behaviour so as not to appear lesbian or gay in an attempt to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
Jacqui Smith’s response?
Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, congratulated the charity for undertaking “this timely research”. She said: “We are determined that lesbian and gay people should have the confidence to report crimes to the police knowing they will be taken seriously, the crime investigated and their privacy respected.”
Or alternatively, as Jacqui said on Monday:
She added: “With particular regard to Iran, current case law handed down by the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal concludes that the evidence does not show a real risk of discovery of, or adverse action against gay and lesbian people who are discreet about their sexual orientation.”
Which seems to imply that, even allowing for the constant anxiety of discovery, torture and death, it’s better to live day-to-day in a state of fear in Iran than to do so in Britain. Why does Jacqui hate her country so much?
