Take the Positivity Challenge

Continuing my hopefully temporary residence in Sloth City, I hereby finally respond to Jim’s invocation of Larry’s Positivity meme, rather than writing the overdue post about Heathrow which is actually next on the SW to-do list. As an aside, my current lack of activity is such that I actually allowed myself to watch an entire episode of The Professionals on ITV4 last night, something which no-one in my position (married, two kids) should be allowed to do. It was a particularly bad one too (1-06 in this list), the kind that is actually less realistic than what ensued when you and your mates used to play at being Bodie and Doyle.

Without further ado:

1. My children. Yeah, yeah, motherhood and apple pie too. But anything with that much of a natural aptitude for infinite surprise, physical comedy and amusing noises gets my vote.

2. Contraction and convergence. It’s simple, it’s equitable, it’s alliterative. What’s not to like, Mr Brown?

3. Transition Towns. Some brilliant core ideas and, from the meetings I’ve attended so far, a cascade of enthusiasm.

4. Germany. The beer, the cities, the appearance of the typical German academic (e.g. the guy on the right here), and the humour. Ah yes, the humour.

5. Urban cycling. Even though the capacity of the average British driver to signal left turns in a timely fashion and check blindspots has declined by over 25% in the last decade.

6. Phila’s Nudibranch blogging. You’ll feel better for it.

7. 90s TV. Which is a cheating way of shoehorning Alexei Sayle’s Stuff and Between the Lines together into the final item. Oh, and ID, even though it’s not TV – for many reasons, not least of which is cuddly ol’ Reece Dinsdale putting speed instead of sugar on his cornflakes to illustrate just how headlong is his descent into madness, and the bit with the dart.
